What Is Light Diesel Oil (LDO)?

Light Diesel Oil (LDO) is a petroleum distillate that occupies a position between kerosene and High-Speed Diesel (HSD) in the refining process. It is sometimes referred to as a "blended" fuel product, as it can be produced by blending residual fuel oil with lighter distillates. LDO has a higher viscosity and lower volatility than HSD, making it unsuitable for high-speed vehicle engines but well-suited to slow-speed, heavy-duty industrial applications. Industrial Applications of LDO in Pakistan

LDO serves a critical but often overlooked role in Pakistan's industrial sector:

Brick Kilns: Pakistan has one of the largest brick kiln industries in South Asia, employing hundreds of thousands of workers. Traditional kilns use coal or wood, but many modern kilns have transitioned to LDO for more controlled and cleaner combustion. LDO-fired kilns are more energy-efficient and produce more uniform brick quality.

Textile and Dyeing Industry:Pakistan's textile sector — the country's largest export earner — requires large amounts of heat energy for dyeing, finishing and processing fabrics. Engine Compatibility: HSD is designed for fast-moving vehicle and generator engines (high RPM). LDO is designed for slow-speed industrial engines and burners. Using LDO in an HSD engine will cause fuel system damage, increased deposits and engine wear.
